  • Attack of the Past #1 – The Legend of Kage

    I have a lot of video games. I don’t know if I am what is considered a collector or not because I am not one of those who has games in their factory packaging or shows off my mint condition Nintendo Power strategy guides from the late 80’s. I just think of myself as a consumer of video game products, someone who has faithfully supported both the new and used game market for decades. When I look at my ridiculous collection of video games I ask myself a very simple question, what the hell am I supposed to do with all these games that I don’t play anymore? After minutes and minutes of hard thought I have concluded that it would be best to review them on a random basis. So begins a practice that I hope will be nostalgic for some, entertaining for some, and at worst a use for all these games I have.

    The majority of these games I have played, but there are going to be many titles that I have not. Remember, I’m a buyer. I had a bad habit for a long time of going onto Ebay and looking for sellers who sold “lots” of NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, etc games. A lot is a formal word for “a large amount.” I’d find someone selling a lot of 50 NES games for example and I’d notice that I didn’t have many of those games, so I’d buy it. This went on for a long time thanks to banks that loved to increase my credit limit thereby increasing my debt. So what I am going to do is create a spreadsheet of every game that I have and will review them randomly. My collection is focused on NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, Dreamcast, and PS1 games so who knows what will pop up.

    Some of these games I have not touched since the 80’s when I first bought them and beat them. A great example is the game The Legend of Kage, which for memory’s sake I’m going to actually choose instead of going randomly. This game was released in 1987 and it is the first game that I received for my NES. Oddly enough I think I got the game before I even got an NES.

    My family in Taiwan gave us a Famicom and my father wasn’t sure if an NES cartridge would work with it, well it didn’t. About a year later I got my NES along with the classic Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt cart but I had to get some Kage action first since it’d been sitting around in my house for a year. I was like 6 years old at the time, can you imagine any 6 year old waiting a year for anything? I had read the instruction manual so many times in my year long preparation for the game that I knew the controls as soon as I fired it up (let’s be honest though, there were only 2 buttons back then).

    So the hardest part about reviewing games like this is to try and think objectively about the game as opposed to paying attention to details such as…well the details. This game is from 1987 and my wedding ring takes up more memory than it does. The graphics can hardly be called that and the music is a two part melodic flute piece that repeats every 25 seconds. So I will do my best to look past the characters with no facial features or moving body parts and remember that at one time in ancient Japan there were people who were not lucky enough to have facial features or moving body parts and this game is a historical homage to them.

    Overall the gameplay is simple, one of your buttons throws ninja stars which can actually be aimed when you are jumping, so you can throw them at enemies behind you while in flight. I am not clear on how that physically works but according to the internet, ninjas are awesome. You  other weapon is sword colored much like your your skin which you wave around in a circular motion:  allowing you to kill ninjas from above, knock away incoming projectiles: and raise up, take your shirt off, twist it around your head like a helicopter (how many video game reviews have a Petey Pablo reference?).

    You can jump from tree to tree in an odd cross legged position while throwing ninja stars in all different angles. The main bad guys are different colored ninjas that attack with their katana or their own ninja stars. There is also a stronger enemy that can breathe fire who looks a lot like an 8-bit version of Raiden from Mortal Kombat. Oddly enough, it only takes one hit from your sword of star to kill either of the main enemies but unfortunately it only takes one hit for yourself to die as well.

    The plot is standard. The princess is captured and you are tasked with rescuing her. There are four levels. The opening forest, a waterway where you can be on ground or in the water, a climbing level where you jump up ledge to ledge, and finally the interior castle level where you rescue her. Each level has its own goal and you have the ability to move around quite a bit and really explore the space (more cowbell?). Once you complete the rescue you get to start over again and play the levels again but at a harder difficulty level and they even change the graphic colors to make it look like the season has changed. I like the addition of this and it shows that replay value was taken into account. As for the princess being kidnapped every 3 months though, you’d hope her security detail would learn their lesson sooner or later.

    Overall this game is fun and challenging. I can make fun of the graphics and simplicity but in reality it is the simplicity combined with the smart level layout and objectives that make this game enjoyable. There are some little surprises in the game that you’ll find add even more to the playability of it and I’ll let you discover them on your own but in the end I am happy that I pulled this game out and gave it a run. Game designers today can learn a lot from games like this. We don’t need hundreds of different functions and combinations to be impressed. We just need something that challenges us and gives us the tools and entertainment value to keep us engaged in meeting the objectives and The Legend of Kage did this. Thanks dad for getting this game for me, sorry it took 27 years to let you know.

  • PlayStation survey hints at reputation system and other possible features

    Sony’s latest PlayStation survey indicates that the company is planning to introduce a reputation system. The survey also highlights other features that Sony may be working towards. Some of the other features mentioned are invisibility, advanced matchmaking, ability to change PSN usernames and more.

    The survey focuses on the would be reputation system by asking PlayStation members about how they would like it to work, and how they would rank their PlayStation Network community experience. It is possible that Sony is working on a reputation system much like the one announced by Microsoft.

    However, the survey also covers a slew of other features that the company may implement in a future PS4 firmware update. In the survey, users can rate how appealing the following PS4 features would be: player reputation system, advanced matchmaking system, ability to chat across PlayStation platforms, ability to change your PlayStation username, ability to be invisible when online, ability to party chat with more than eight people at the time, ability to synchronize messages across platforms, and on-screen notifications when friends come online.

    Although the survey focuses on the reputation system and online experience, it is interesting to see that Sony is mentioning that players may be able to change their PlayStation usernames.

  • Final Fantasy X Retrospective

    I remember when I first played Final Fantasy X. It was an experience that I will go out there and say it right now to the interweb masses, life changing. With the upcoming release of Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster  I believe that this is great moment to review the original incarnation of the games from a current point of view as opposed to the 10+ year old reviews that many would-be buyers may read.

    The Final Fantasy series is one of the longest running franchises in entertainment. I’m not just talking about video games but the entertainment industry in whole. The series spans nearly 30 years, outlasted only by a few other well-known franchises you may have heard of:  James Bond, Godzilla, Star Trek, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones. In terms of video games, only the likes of Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong have lasted longer while it is also of note to mention that another game was first released the same year as the first Final Fantasy, Metal Gear. It takes something special to have the longevity of these entertainment franchises and as we take a glimpse into the experience of Final Fantasy X/X-2, I hope that you too will see just how beautiful and rewarding of a game this is.

    When we talk about any RPG, we should always first start with the story. Like all Final Fantasy games this story focuses on a group of heroes on a quest to save the world. You are Tidus, the Lebron James of Blitzball (just go with it), and are pressed into the service of Yuna, a summoner on a pilgrimage to rid the world of the evil monster known as “Sin.” You along with her band of guardians: Lulu (mage), Wakka (also a blitzballer), Auron (big sword wielding Ronin-type character),and  Kimhari (big buff beast with a horn on his head) must travel across the world of Spira, visiting temples along the way to get to the big fight at the end against Sin. Of course I’m leaving out a lot of plot details but the point is that the overall story and goal are basic. Like any RPG though it is not the plot structure that matters but instead the intricacies of the characters, their development, and their interaction with you, the player.

    The game opens with Tidus delivering a voice-over, narrating the story to you in a first person autobiographical style. You experience the game through his point of view as a retelling, having him revisit you in voice over form periodically throughout the story reflecting on what he was thinking at the time and how he feels about that situation now. This development of Tidus is personal, I mean he is talking to you directly and explaining his feelings, insecurities and so on. Rarely do you have this level of insight into a character’s motives and thoughts like you do with him and building that relationship between the main character and the game player is vital in my opinion for any RPG.

    The other characters are written just as well as Tidus. Yuna exhibits the insecurity of a young summoner who must grapple a task that at times seems well above her head. Her guardians Wakka and Lul

    u provide emotional support for her during her pilgrimage while also tutoring Tidus regarding his role in the journey. Auron and Kimhari do not speak as much but like the other characters are hashed out well and are consistent.

    The biggest aspect of the original game was the voice acting. What is now common-place among high end video games was just beginning to be possible due to advances in hardware at the turn of the millennium. The voice acting is good, though can be at times awkward due to the localization efforts. The scenes were all designed for Japanese speech, so having to matchup English speech to have the same effect in the same amount of time proved to be a difficulty. Think the filming of the commercial scene in “Lost in Translation”, Suntory Time!

    All games in the series have always been known for their sound and visuals and as the first Final Fantasy game for the PS2, X was able to take full advantage of the processing power and deliver stunning visuals with a cinematic score complementing it. The pre-rendered scenes were gorgeous and the details of things as simple as the drops of water falling from the hair of Tidus were ahead of their time and to this day still look great.

    But what about the gameplay?

    The game plays easily. There is no hour long tutorial at the beginning of the game teaching you how to attack, use magic, or access an item. The feel is intuitive and it is your standard conditional turn-based RPG setup. There are three active combatants on your side at once but you can sub in another member of your party at any time. This allows you to fight against enemies with different weaknesses with your party member that is best qualified to handle it. For example, Wakka throws a blitzball as his weapon and is effective against flying foes while Kimhari uses a spear whose piercing effect is best against armored foes. If you enter a fight with a flying enemy and you only have fighters in your party who pierce or slash, you can sub out Kimhari in realtime and bring Wakka in.  You can have Wakka kill the flying foe while the other two members attack a different enemy. Once the flying foe is dead you can tag team Wakka out for Kimhari and focus your attack or follow whatever other strategy you want.

    Leveling up is done on a more custom based process called a sphere grid. This is a foundation of sorts for later RPGs where players can customize their level progression by choosing how they want to apply their leveling. Each character begins in their own section of the grid but as time passes they are able to cross over into other ones and learn the abilities of other characters.

    There are plenty of side quests for you to do along the way as well. Everything from deciphering a language to collecting the pieces needed for legendary weapons and obtaining special Aeons for summoning. I don’t feel that this is the strongest point of the game but there is plenty to keep you busy.

    The key to this game though is its ability to immerse the player into it which is the point behind a role playing game.  The genre of RPGs is simple, you are playing the game as someone else. You learn about them, their strengths and weaknesses not necessarily as a combatant, but as a person. FFX gives us insight into the life of Tidus complete with his insecurities and daddy issues. These are issues that we are able to relate to and it is story telling like this which catches our attention and keeps it. Depth is where this game shines in both story-telling and playability and it is where games like FFXIII have fallen short.

    In order to truly develop a relationship with a character you have to see them in different situations, making decisions or showing their vulnerabilities. You need to see them as people and not stock characters who fulfill a plot point. FFX’s dynamic characters deliver a true epic RPG experience along with a follow up sequel for those who wish to continue the story of Yuna and Spira. I’ll admit it is pretty different from FFX and isn’t on my list of all-time favorite RPG’s but at the release price for FFX/X-2 HD of $40, you are getting a blockbuster game and a sequel that you may enjoy which I think is a fine deal.

    I’ll be reviewing the HD versions very soon but will focus on the additions to the game since it is the international version which is different from the North American release version that I’m familiar with. Screenshots of the HD version have been around for a couple months so anyone can find that if they want to, but the content is what I care about.  I’ll check back in when I hit around 100 hours of gameplay.   • PS4 price increasing by $50 in Canada

    The Toronto Sun is reporting that the price of new PS4 consoles will rise to $449.99 as opposed to the current price of $399.99.

    According to the report, Sony has confirmed the price increase “to respond to changes in the market environment.” This is not unprecedented as Canada has already seen price increases on individual game titles to $64.99 over the standard pricing of $59.99. The report also states that upcoming titles “Infamous: Second Son and MLB 14 The Show will be priced at $69.99.”

    Though pinpointing any one reason would only be speculation, it can be assumed that the current instability in the currency markets along with the weakening of the Canadian Dollar could fuel this type of business decision. As the value of the currency falls, the cost for importing products will rise which could explain this price increase since the PS4 is not manufactured in Canada. Residents of the United States would not need to worry about a price increase since the US Dollar is not experiencing any weakening of the likes of its Canadian counterpart. Of course other factors could cause a price increase domestically and we’ll keep you informed if anything comes to light.

  • BAFTA Games Awards 2014 winners announced

    Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic game, The Last of Us, has been awarded with five BAFTA Games Awards. Other winners include Gone Home, Tearaway, and Grand Theft Auto V; the two last ones received three awards each.

  • Watch Dogs close Beta spotted

    A Watch Dogs closed beta has been spotted by two Reddit users who posted separate photos of the beta listed on the Xbox One Games Store yesterday. This may suggest that Ubisoft is giving players the chance to interact with the game before it hits later this year. However, if you were hoping to get in on the action, the listing is no longer there.

    According to MP1st, the listing could be a hiccup of an internal beta that Ubisoft is conducting. It is possible that at one point or another, the beta may have accidentally gone external. With Watch Dogs’ launch date rapidly approaching, it is possible that Ubisoft is making sure their game works properly.

    Last year, Watch Dogs was delayed from its original release date window as a PS4 and Xbox One launch title. The game will be in store shelves for Xbox One, PS4, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on May 27.
    Ubisoft hasn’t made any announcements as of you yet, but we will update you once they do.

  • Sony acquires ‘World War Z’ author’s ‘Harlem Hellfighters’

    If you enjoyed Max Brooks’ World War Z then you’ll also be glad to hear that the rights to his latest graphic novel The Harlem Hellfighters were picked up by Sony.

    The Harlem Hellfighters is based on the true story of the Army’s 369th infantry division, the first African American unit to serve in the American Expeditionary Force during World War 1.

    The novel follows “their journey from the enlistment lines in Harlem to training camp at Spartanburg, South Carolina, to the tranches of Europe.”

    The Hollywood Reporter says that though “their unit spend the most time in combat than any other American unit” and won several decorations, upon return to the U.S. they were met with discrimination by their government and the public.

    Indiewire reports that the film adaptation of the novel will be produced by Will Smith and James Lassiter through Smith’s production company, Overbook Entertainment.

    Although Will Smith will be producing the film, there is indication that he will also star in it.

    The graphic novel was illustrated by Caanan White and will be available for sale on April 1, 2014. THR also reports that Brooks will also adapt the script.

    Max Brooks previously wrote The Zombie Survival Guide: Record Attacks, the mini-series GI: Joe Hearts & Minds, and The Extinction Parade.

    Sony has yet to make public a release date for the film adaptation of The Harlem Hellfighters.

    As you can see, VGX has launched with a bare-bones design and functionality (our Pre-Alpha build). This is because HTR Design has focused all its efforts in creating a strong backbone to support all our publishing needs. Behind the scenes, our website is strong and capable of many awesome and complex operations. In the coming months, HTR will refine our backend and style our website with an amazing design. Once we’ve reached a certain point in our development, we will have an awesome relaunch party. Keep your crosshairs locked on us for that one.
