PlayStation survey hints at reputation system and other possible features

Sony’s latest PlayStation survey indicates that the company is planning to introduce a reputation system. The survey also highlights other features that Sony may be working towards. Some of the other features mentioned are invisibility, advanced matchmaking, ability to change PSN usernames and more.

The survey focuses on the would be reputation system by asking PlayStation members about how they would like it to work, and how they would rank their PlayStation Network community experience. It is possible that Sony is working on a reputation system much like the one announced by Microsoft.

However, the survey also covers a slew of other features that the company may implement in a future PS4 firmware update. In the survey, users can rate how appealing the following PS4 features would be: player reputation system, advanced matchmaking system, ability to chat across PlayStation platforms, ability to change your PlayStation username, ability to be invisible when online, ability to party chat with more than eight people at the time, ability to synchronize messages across platforms, and on-screen notifications when friends come online.

Although the survey focuses on the reputation system and online experience, it is interesting to see that Sony is mentioning that players may be able to change their PlayStation usernames.

We’ll let you know if we learn anything else on these features.

        Everyone hates multiplayer at first. You get your ass handed to you. You can’t depend on scripted events and trial / error game play. I like having another brain to fight against.
        
        Liking multiplayer in a game is about having the fortitude to get your ass beat but get back up and try again. Perhaps doing something different to outsmart your opponent.
        
        Not all multiplayer is created equally though.

      Microsoft wasn’t the inventor of online multiplayer. As a matter of fact Microsoft innovates very little their business strategy entails purchasing competitors to enhance their product lines. DOS was purchased, Excel was purchased, MS Word may have been an original, PowerPoint, etc, etc.
      
      Windows is Microsoft, but they largely copied Xerox GUI. Much of what is inside of Windows is licensed to Microsoft from other vendors.
      
      Microsoft’s foray into the games business would have been pretty short lived had it not been for the purchase of Bungie, which at the time was working on Halo for the PS2 (you can find videos online).
      
      So care to tell me about all this home grown talent MS has?

        Most of us who own PS4s aren’t occupying all of our time with indie games. I am sorry you haven’t been able to budget properly for next gen, but most of us already playing next gen games are more than happy with the money we spent.
        
        I support any developers making games for the PS4, be they large AAA entities or small independent developers.
        
        Only a biased mental midget would think having a larger selection of games available is a bad thing.

This survey is fake based on survey questions 3 and 8. Survey question number 3 ask about cross-chat on ps3, when any Playstation user would know it’s not possible due to ram limitations. While question number 8 is utterly stupid, why would sony ask about a feature that is already used in the PS3. Open your eyes people, any one can put together a survey, and claim it’s legit. Notice, the poster of this article cannot provide a link because it doesn’t exist.

  One, I can say the cross plat chat can easily work wit PS3 jus how it works now youjust wont be able to do anything else as a PS3 user beside sit in your chat room. dull but useful feature if implemented.
  As for the 8th, I heard a lot of people requesting this on sonys twitter when PS4 launched . Id imagine Sony was thinking if youno have potentially 2000 friends signing on and off al day would be annoying it was annoying just wit 80 I deleted many people for this reason. hope ths helps.

    It MAY be possible to do cross platform chat on the PS3/PS4/PSV. It would have to be an application that ran in the cloud, or perhaps PS3 players could rely on the PS4 Host for the voice features.
    
    Having chat run locally on the PS3 would eat away too much memory for games to run properly. If Sony has optimized the PS3’s XMB memory foot print more they may have headroom for a hosted voice solution that doesn’t require as much resources on the local hardware.
    
    This is my speculation though, not saying that I am 100% right, just thinking out loud.

        My naive, very confused friend. Perhaps you did not get the memo.
        
        The XBONE is not as powerful as the PlayStation 4 on the hardware level. This is well documented by people who have far more knowledge on this subject than you.
        
        There is no measurable metric that gives the XBONE any advantages over the PS4. This was due to MS’ insistence to include a very expensive underutilized camera with every system.
        
        The gaming community has responded to this information and the PlayStation 4 install base exceeds that of the XBONE.
        
        If you want to argue that you prefer the XBONE because you love XBOX, that is fine, but if you want to continue to argue your talking points vs observable and obvious facts you sir are a complete XBONER.
        
        Now try thinking this time before you respond and maybe you won’t sound like a complete ass-hat.

        Much of that hoopla was based on the ESRAM theoretical speeds which haven’t exactly panned out in most real world scenarios. In practice every game available for both systems is superior on the PS4, that gives credence to two things. The hardware is better and Sony’s APIs have come a long way.
        
        Sure MS can optimize and tighten things up to make more memory available for games, but so can Sony. What Microsoft can not do is recall every XBONE and distribute XBONE with GDDR5 memory. That alone gives Sony’s PS4 a huge advantage.
        
        This doesn’t even get into the GPU which on almost all measurable metrics the PS4’s GPU exceeds the XBONE’s GPU with the exception of MHz.
        
        On paper the PS4 is a better system all around than the XBONE, in practice this has been proven with just about every major multiplatform release available.
        
        Does this mean games are doomed to be horrible on the XBONE? Not really, just means that over all the games should look better on PS4. Over time this may be minimized but I don’t think it will ever be erased.

        We will get hundreds more because Sony is more friendly to developers than Microsoft. The advantage MS had with the X360 (being easier to code for) is completely erased this generation and has been nearly erased for the PS3/X360 games coming out for the last couple of years now.

        Sony has better exclusives, more diverse exclusives and more exclusives. If you own a PlayStation system you would know that already.
        
        I don’t own an XBOX but I know who MS studios are and Sony has more studios than MS. They produce more games more often than Xbox Studios. Most of Xbox exclusives come from contracts with multiplatform developers.

        Ryse looks pretty (sub-HD) but game doesn’t have tons of soul to it. I heard internally they were saying it wasn’t AAA quality game which is why they focused so much on the finishing moves.
        
        God of War didn’t spawn multiple sequels because it had great finishing moves. 🙂

        At the moment neither system has a ton of exclusive games for them, but I believe PS4 has more. I am not sure where you get your numbers from, but when you look at the games in development, the math doesn’t lie. Sony has more in the clip than MS does and that list is growing every day. MS is not making concessions to studios in order to maintain pace, but it’s not closing the gap.

        The only big guns they brought last year were policy attacks. Their software lineup was mediocre (at best). This year will likely be better, but you’re underestimating MS. When a behemoth like Microsoft is backed into a corner, don’t doubt how deep they’ll dig to undo the damage. They’ve got money to spend, unlike some companies, so expect one hell of a show – regardless of which presentation you’re viewing.

        Really? Because last time I checked, Xbox exclusives have never won Game of the Year, while PlayStation exclusives have won it in 2005, 2008, 2009, 2012, and 2013. Multiplats won the other years. PlayStation-owned studios like Naughty Dog are widely considered the best developers in the entire industry, being able to release blockbuster after blockbuster titles. I don’t see why suddenly everyone doubts their talent.

        Well I can say every (and I’m not exaggerating) person I’ve talked to, that being a lot, liked Ryse. None have said it’s perfect, and I’m sure some people don’t like it, but overall I think It’s a good game, that I feel most would enjoy, and end up wanting more after the short campaign. Honestly I’d give it a 7.8/10 or so.

  Because out of the gate Sony focused on the gaming aspects and didn’t get caught up in DVR bullshit or forcing their customers to buy a camera they may have no use for.
  
  When they introduced the system last year in February, they said this and they noted that like the PS3 the PS4 would be getting more features down the road.
  
  Also X360 did not launch in the form it is in today, neither did PS3. While Sony has traditionally lagged behind XBL features, they more than make up for this with great free games with PS+.
  
  Microsoft just started doing free games recently.
  
  Microsoft followed Sony into the game industry with the XBOX.

They reworked their ENTIRE OS because people held issues with almost all the requited functionality of the awesome sharing features. But despite reworking the OS? MS still jumped on remedying the issues faster than Sony. Granted, features like Twitch weren’t implemented until last month, and external HDD support still isn’t a thing, but the XO’s firmware updates have been leagues ahead of the PS4’s.
    
    PS+ is great. But that’s about all the service has going for it in terms of service advantages. Also, one incentive isn’t “who’s playing catchup now!”

      DVR Bullshit as in the ability to watch shows on the XBONE via the Cable Box. The Share functionality is germane to gaming because there are lots of cool things people are doing in games and that is interesting for others to watch.

      They reworked their entire OS because even after EA had such a backlash with SimCity requiring always online, MS still went FULL STEAM AHEAD with this infinity stupid plan, especially in the United States where internet connections are not as robust as they are in smaller countries. The fact that Don Mattrick had no reasonable response when asked what would military people do if they didn’t have internet. Which is usually the case when deployed aboard. Given the military unofficially selected X360 as their console of choice last generation, MS was extremely neglectful of that demographic.
      
      The sharing features on the PS4 overall out due the XBONE, you can share the last 15 minutes of gameplay not just the last 5 minutes. XBONE’s video editting features do offer more features, but Sony is working on creating a more robust video sharing application.
      
      The sharing features had absolutely NOTHING to do with why MS reworked the XBONE OS. Not sure where you got that notion from but it is 100% out of phase with reality.
      
      But despite reworking the OS? MS still jumped on remedying the issues faster than Sony. Granted

      MS isn’t a company stooped in lots of invention. Most of the tech they own was bought out to eliminate competition. Windwos was copied from Xerox, DOS was bought from a smaller developer, Excel, PowerPoint were too. MS Word may be an original, but was highly influenced by the original market leader: WordPerfect. MS got into the game biz seeing how successful PS2 was, they even backed Sega at first (DreamCast had a version of Windows for it). When that didn’t pan out, they bought up Bungie and released the XBOX.
      
      MS is always playing catch up because they haven’t blazed any trails in years.

How come this picture doesn’t show how Nintendo “copied MS and Sony on making discs and not cartridges, what about memory cards, friends list, and internet used on a mass scale, a hub or home screen the list goes on. They all inspire each other to mold this industry with competition. I see that no one can create a genre and no one else can make alternatives? Ah, so good to see a place where all the Xbox fanboys can get together and bash Sony.

Even though I would like to add something to a lot of the comments, I am far to busy to be bothered to show trolls the right way. I would like to add one thing though. You do realize this is a SURVEY? This is not Sony copying anything or the PS4 trying to be an Xbone. This is to ask the user, the client, they guys they are trying to please, what they want as features, and that is a good thing. This helps them to understand the client better.

Also (ok, make that two things I want to add), companies copying each other is nothing new. Looking at the backlash most companies receive when they try to “innovate” by changing something, just shows how little the client likes chance. If something works, companies stick by it and even use other companies’ designs.

Why can’t a company learn from some ideas from a competitor and not be labeled a copy-cat? There could be another feature list of improvements for the Xbone that would include some PS features.
1) Quality games with gold games. Even if you switch to owning only while a LIVE member.
2) Access to streaming services w/o XboxLIVE
3) Cross-platform buy.
Some services, such as the ID@Xbox/Games with Gold, would not even have resulted without pressure from PS. In all, each update that adds features and improves the experience should not be ridiculed. In contrast, they should be praised and seen as humble signs that a company like MS or Sony would change policies, even if it started with their competitor

    I agree with you about sell PSN ID, but I think maybe sony will give the players 2 time to change their ID in a year or the first change is free then you have to pay to change it again.
    But changing the region is available at XboxLive so, I think sony can make it possible to.

Fanboys are annoying. Copying is the highest form of flattery, why is Sony copying Microsoft a bad thing? I mean companies copy each other all the time, which is good, all that matters is who does it better, not first(unless it’s a big gap between the two, then first matters sometimes) Woohoo for Playstation fans and Xbox fans, why can’t we all be happy?

  @liam_hall:disqus You act as if MS was the first person to think up these features. A reputation system isn’t anything new. Matchmaking isn’t either.
  
  Video games and multiplayer existed and thrived long before XBOX was even on the drawing board. Sony is just trying to understand what things are most important to the gamers so they can adjust their development resources to deliver features people want. Even if those features are similar to their competitors.
  
  You know what feature MS copied off of Sony? Making a video game console! 🙂

    Wouldn’t that be copying Atari? I didn’t act like that really though, I actually made sure not to hint at what was copied by who. Though I can’t think of a reputation system outside of MS for consoles, and I can’t think of someone who didn’t overly effect matchmaking on consoles more than Xbox.
